Bodies/Shafts Wrap Up

Aluminum shock bodies provide excellent corrosion resistance and superior heat dissipation compared to steel. One-piece designs keep things simple, while two-piece designs add modularity, allowing individual components to be replaced if damaged. Two-piece bodies are also more compact and can accommodate features like decorative caps.

Both FOX and Ride Shocks use hard-anodized aluminum bodies. Unlike coated steel shocks that may flake or rust over time, the anodized finish gradually fades while maintaining long-term durability and performance.

King Shocks, on the other hand, utilize robust steel bodies with cadmium plating, offering strong corrosion resistance and a rugged finish built for demanding environments. Zinc and cadmium plating provide similar protection against rust and wear, with the choice largely coming down to manufacturer preference and the desired aesthetic.

Front / Rear Rod Ends Wrap Up:

FRONTS:
Front rod end design matters, especially since the stock Bronco uses bar pins that are press-fit into the lower shock mount—making removal and service a hassle. All three aftermarket designs improve on this, simplifying shock removal and future maintenance.

FOX uses a simple, tapped single-rod design that allows the mounting bolts to be installed from below the lower control arm. It’s a clean, straightforward, and durable solution.

Both King and Ride feature a through-bolt design with a nut on top to securely capture the rod end assembly.

FOX and Ride both use USA-made FK Bearings, considered among the highest-quality rod end bearings available. King uses Chinese-manufactured rod end bearings. Additionally, FOX and Ride include butyl rubber seals on the outside of the bearings to help extend service life and reduce contamination.

REARS:
Rear rod end design and bearing quality also play a role in durability and long-term performance. FOX and Ride utilize an offset rear rod end design, which improves clearance and fitment throughout the suspension’s travel. King’s rear rod end design is centered.

Once again, FOX and Ride use USA-made FK Bearings, while King uses Chinese-manufactured bearings.

King does offer plastic rock guards that help protect the shock shafts from rock damage—an effective and useful feature, especially in rocky terrain.

Front / Rear Springs Wrap Up:

All of these manufacturers coil springs play a major role in supporting your vehicle against gravity, but the differences show up when comparing available colors, standard spring rates, and optional spring rate choices.

Fox comes standard with a 600 LB spring. If you need a heavier spring rate due to added front end weight from accessories, that option is available at an additional cost and AccuTune will tune the shocks to match.

King offers heavier spring rates including 650 LB and 700 LB options, but these must be special ordered. AccuTune will tune the shocks to match those spring rates.

Ride offers 550 LB and 650 LB front spring options, along with 235 LB and 275 LB multi rate rear springs to support different vehicle generations and added weight. Each shock and spring combination is custom valved for compression, rebound, and adjuster settings to properly support the intended weight and deliver the best ride quality.

Ride Shocks come standard with 5/8" fittings and hoses

Oil Flow Wrap Up:

Oil flow is a critical factor in how comfortable and tunable a shock feels. Shocks with limited oil flow can feel harsh during short, fast movements like rough roads, washboard sections, and choppy ruts. Insufficient oil flow can also cause the suspension to feel overly stiff on larger impacts such as speed bumps and whoops.

Fox uses an 8 size hose, which is considered the industry standard for these OEM applications. King uses a smaller 6 size hose, which is less common for this type of setup. Ride uses a 10 size hose, the largest we have seen for these applications.

On Bronco rear shocks, King’s primary flow limitation is the 6 size hose, although many of their other shock designs use an 8 size hose. Fox’s flow limitation comes from the adjuster ports in the DSC system, while Ride’s flow limitation is located in the remote reservoir hose.

Oil Wrap Up:

Shock oil is evaluated using a few key criteria including lubrication quality, how much the viscosity changes with temperature, and resistance to boiling or cavitation.

All three oils provide strong lubricating properties, are compatible with common seal materials, and perform their primary function well. The differences become more noticeable as shock temperatures rise.

Shock fade occurs when heat causes the oil to thin, reducing damping and decreasing protection for internal components. Viscosity index is used to measure how stable the oil remains as temperatures increase. A viscosity index of 400 is considered excellent, while 100 is below average. Fox set the benchmark with a viscosity index of 375. King’s oil sits closer to average with a viscosity index of 150, while Ride Shocks oil also carries a viscosity index of 375.

Cavitation happens when shock oil boils and creates air pockets, which significantly reduce damping and can damage internal components. Fox oil has a boiling point of 496 degrees Fahrenheit, King oil boils at 320 degrees Fahrenheit, and Ride Shocks oil boils at 615 degrees Fahrenheit. Although these temperatures are high, they are measured at atmospheric pressure. Because shocks do not always maintain positive pressure, boiling points can become a concern under hard use.

Fox JM92 oil has long been considered the industry benchmark among conventional shock oils due to its durability and high temperature performance. Ride Shocks uses a newer fully synthetic oil blend that matches Fox in resistance to fade, exceeds it in resistance to cavitation, and withstands even higher operating temperatures.

The Fox low speed adjuster functions like a bleed valve. Turning the adjuster opens or closes a needle and seat, allowing a controlled amount of oil to flow into the reservoir.

As oil speed and pressure increase, it is diverted through the main shim stack into the reservoir. This is known as the high speed circuit.

The high speed adjuster works by increasing preload on the shim stack, which raises the pressure required for oil to begin flowing through the shims. As that pressure threshold increases, high speed damping is increased, providing more control during faster suspension movements.

The mid speed adjuster on King Shocks functions like a large bleed valve, allowing more or less oil to pass through the piston as the adjuster knob is turned. In practice, the mid speed compression adjuster behaves like an oversized low speed compression adjuster. When fully open, it allows a large volume of oil to flow freely, and when fully closed, it restricts oil flow almost entirely.

The Ride Shocks low speed adjuster also functions as a bleed valve. Turning the adjuster opens or closes a needle and seat, allowing a controlled amount of oil to flow into the reservoir.

At low shaft speeds, oil flows through the low speed needle circuit and into the reservoir. As shaft speeds increase, oil begins to pass through the first piston. After exiting the first piston, oil initially flows through the high speed adjuster circuit.

As the high speed adjuster is closed or set stiffer, oil is forced through the second piston, which increases high speed compression damping and provides greater control during faster suspension movements.

Adjusters Wrap Up:

Compression adjusters play a major role in ride quality by allowing the driver to make external adjustments to account for added weight or changing terrain.

Low speed compression refers to how fast the shock shaft moves into the body during slower suspension events. This includes cornering, braking, acceleration, and driving over large rolling bumps. Adjusting low speed compression primarily affects handling, body control, and overall road feel.

Mid speed compression can influence both low and high speed characteristics to a degree. When the goal is to control road feel, handling, and g outs, low speed damping is the primary adjustment. For big impacts like bumps and whoops, high speed compression has the greatest effect. A mid speed adjuster combines aspects of both with a single knob, but offers a narrower adjustment range compared to having separate low and high speed controls.

High speed compression occurs when the shock compresses very quickly, regardless of vehicle speed. This happens when hitting curbs, speed bumps, rocks, or whoops, where rapid shaft movement requires immediate damping control.

King compression adjusters use a simple and easy to operate design with mid speed compression adjustment only. This straightforward approach works well for drivers who want effective performance without spending time fine tuning multiple settings.

Fox uses a more complex system with separate high and low speed compression adjustment. These shocks are typically valved for the stiffest application, and the digressive nature of the adjuster can add low speed damping disproportionately to high speed damping, which may make smaller bumps feel firmer than desired.

Ride Shocks DPA adjusters feature application specific valving designed for multiple use cases. The dual piston linear design delivers predictable feel across the adjustment range, while increased oil flow helps maintain consistent performance from soft to firm settings.

Seals Wrap Up:

Each manufacturer has invested significant time and engineering into their seal package design, and every approach comes with its own advantages and tradeoffs.

Based on years of servicing these shocks, a few key findings stand out. Dirt intrusion is the second most common cause of leaking shocks. Shock boots are the most effective defense against dirt and debris entering the seal area, followed by the use of multiple wiper seals. HNBR material is more durable than standard NBR and offers a wider operating temperature range. When it comes to retaining oil, U cup seals are the most effective option and tend to seal more reliably across a broad range of temperatures and shaft speeds compared to traditional o rings.

Valving Wrap Up:

Shock design and oil flow are the foundation of a suspension that rides well. The next critical step is tuning the shock for the specific application and conditions it will be used in.

This is where weight band specific valving comes into play. Fox and King typically rely on a single tune developed for one application. Ride Shocks takes a different approach by using multiple part numbers tailored to specific weight bands for both front and rear setups. This allows Ride Shocks to deliver consistent performance whether the vehicle is a stock base model, a heavily modified overland build, or anything in between.
