Compare Fox factory race series shocks to performance series

One of the most frequent comparisons we get is between the Fox 2.0 Performance Series Remote Reservoir Shock and the Fox 2.0 Factory Race Series Shock. When shopping for custom-length shocks, it’s common to compare different models and wonder which is the best fit for your build.  So, what sets them apart? Is the added cost of the Factory Series worth it? Which one offers a smoother ride? Let’s break it down by taking a closer look at Fox’s universal-fit 2.0 x 12” travel shocks.

While Fox Factory Series shocks come in several configurations, we’ll focus on the most popular version—those with bearings in the eyelets.

Fox 2.0 Shock Bodies:

The Fox 2.0 Performance Series features a one-piece aluminum shock body that provides excellent corrosion resistance and superior heat dissipation compared to steel-bodied shocks. It also has a thicker wall than the Factory Series, though both share the same internal diameter. On the other hand, the Fox 2.0 Factory Race Series uses a traditional steel shock body with a zinc plating and clear powder coat for added protection.

Fox 2.0 Shock Top Cap
The Performance Series shock features a one-piece billet aluminum body with an integrated top eyelet mount, offering a simple and durable design. In contrast, the Factory Series shocks use a two-piece construction with a separate, replaceable top cap, allowing for easier serviceability and potential upgrades.

Fox 2.0 Shock Mounting
Fox 2.0 Factory Race Series universal-fit smoothie shocks come standard with a ½” ID bearing and spacers to fit a ½” bolt, with a mounting width of 1.25”. Optional spacers for 1.50” wide mounts are available separately. In contrast, Fox 2.0 Performance Series smoothie shocks are offered in a range of mounting configurations designed to fit OEM vehicles, including various urethane bushings, sleeves, bar pins, and stem mounts. For universal-fit applications, the Performance Series typically includes a ½” ID sleeve with a 1.50” mounting width.

Both Fox Performance Series and Factory Series shocks feature aluminum reservoirs with a hard anodized coating, though the color may vary between models. They also share the same braided hose and fittings. Internally, the key difference is in the IFP (Internal Floating Piston): Factory Series shocks use an aluminum IFP designed for high temperatures and racing conditions, while Performance Series shocks use a plastic IFP, which is more cost-effective and suited for high-volume production.

For reservoir mounting, Performance Series shocks include an aluminum clamp that secures the reservoir directly to the shock body. Factory Series shocks come with rubber mounting blocks and hose clamps, designed to attach to a shock hoop or similar tubing. For more flexibility, AccuTune universal reservoir mounts are available separately.

Fox 2.0 Shock Pistons
The Fox 2.0 Performance Series shock uses a high-flow piston [LEFT], designed to move more oil for a smoother, more comfortable ride—ideal for daily driving and light off-road use. In contrast, the Fox 2.0 Factory Race Series shock features a piston [RIGHT] that flows less oil, resulting in a firmer feel that’s better suited for aggressive, high-speed off-road conditions. Both pistons use the same shim stacks, which can be customized by AccuTune Offroad for optimal performance.

Fox 2.0 Shock Shafts
Fox Performance Series shocks are only available with a 5/8″ 1045 heat-treated steel shaft, which offers solid durability for general use. Factory Series shocks, however, come in both 5/8″ and 7/8″ shaft options. While the 5/8″ version uses the same 1045 material, the 7/8″ shaft is made from 17-4 stainless steel, offering significantly greater strength and corrosion resistance—ideal for extreme off-road use. The 7/8″ version also features upgraded Viton rod seals for improved performance under high heat and pressure.

Fox Performance Series vs. Factory Race Series – Which is Right for You?
Both the Fox Performance Series and Factory Race Series shocks are solid choices for custom 4×4 builds, depending on your driving style and needs. The Factory Race Series is built for serious off-road use and racing, offering full serviceability, tunability, and durability for aggressive terrain. On the other hand, the Performance Series is perfect for daily drivers or mild off-road builds, with a corrosion-resistant aluminum body and long-lasting rubber bushings for a smoother ride and lower maintenance.

Both shocks are available with remote reservoirs and can be custom tuned by AccuTune Offroad to match your vehicle’s weight and driving style—resulting in significantly improved ride quality and performance. With proper care, either option can last a lifetime and are covered under Fox’s 1 year warranty.
